Series: Box Books (Book 3)
It started with a box for collecting heart wishes…
Among the constants in Taylor Mulvaney's life are the
heart-shaped box made by her father, the mysterious hearts she sometimes sees,
and her longtime crush on Luke Montgomery. The Valentine box has a way of
connecting her and Luke time and again - and even after Luke breaks her heart
before leaving their hometown of Sweetwater, Kentucky for good, she never gets
completely over him.
The box brings them back together when they least expect
it.
Fifteen years later, Taylor still sees hearts. And now
she even makes them, baking heart-shaped treats at the Sweetheart Bake Shop.
After a rough start in life, she's found her way. Until, that is, Luke comes
home for his father's funeral, bringing a deluge of old feelings flooding back.
Before she knows it, a note dropped in her still-beloved Valentine box has
Taylor swept up in helping him save his family's horse farm - and trying not to
fall back in love with the guy who once left her shattered.
How will it end?
Could Luke really want Taylor the way she's always wanted
him? Can she trust in the future to turn out better than the past? The Valentine
box is still working its magic to draw them together all these years later, but
can Taylor set her fears aside long enough to believe in a second chance at
love?
Sweet second chance romance. It starts with Taylor as the
new kid in school; her red hair, slight speech impediment, and shyness make her
a target for bullies. Her classmate, Luke, gives her quiet encouragement,
including a sweet Valentine every year.
I loved the flashbacks to their school years, always
around Valentine's Day, with the heart-shaped box Taylor's dad made for her a
central theme. It's no surprise that Taylor develops a crush on Luke. However,
she has no idea that he feels the same way. A missed communication and Luke's
sudden departure during their senior year left both heartbroken.
Fifteen years later, Taylor now owns the Sweetheart
Bakery, where she makes a living selling heart-shaped goodies. Luke returns
home to help settle his father's estate, and the two cautiously rekindle their
friendship. I loved how quickly they reconnected and how easily they could talk.
The more time they spend together, the more their feelings for each other grow.
But Taylor is rooted in Sweetwater, and Luke will eventually return to his home
and businesses in Utah. Taylor's friends encourage her to "just have fun,"
but she wants more.
Communication is once again at the heart of Luke and Taylor's
problems. I loved seeing her stand up for her wants and needs, but she stopped short
of full disclosure. Luke's reaction mirrors his earlier history until friends set
him straight. I loved their reactions to his obliviousness and laughed at his
"aha" moment. He still has to make things right. Luke's big moment at
the end was sweet, but it almost didn't happen because he didn't learn from the
past. The epilogue was terrific.
I loved the small-town setting. The characters were
realistic, from the former high school bully to the friends who made their
lives in their hometown. I especially enjoyed the storyline of the big factory
that wants to relocate to their town. The townspeople's reactions were realistic,
as was Luke's desire to do what was right for the town and his family. The
solution was creative, and I loved how it came about.

Guarding His Witness - Lisa Childs (HRS #2029 - Feb 2019)
Series: Bachelor Bodyguards (Book 9)
Protecting a murder witness…
Former vice cop Clint Quarters is haunted by the memory
of an informant he couldn't save. And the victim's devastated sister, Rosie
Mendez, hasn't forgiven him, either. But when the bodyguard must protect murder
witness Rosie, the danger they face is only rivaled by the red-hot electricity
between them. Can Clint keep Rosie safe, or will her testimony lead to certain
death -- for them both?
Rosie witnessed the murder of her brother, Javier, an
informant against a local drug kingpin. Luther may be in jail awaiting trial,
but he still pulls strings. He wants Rosie and the other people involved in his
arrest dead. Clint is a former vice cop working as a bodyguard for Payne
Protection. When the police chief hires the agency to protect those in danger,
Clint draws Rosie as his protectee. The trouble is that Clint was Javier's
contact, and Rosie holds him responsible for his death.
Clint also blames himself. He promised Javier he would
protect Rosie and nothing will stop him from keeping that promise, not even
Rosie herself. Rosie irritated the heck out of me. First, with her stubborn
insistence, she wasn't in any danger, even though she knew better. Then, the
actions that exposed her to that danger, from insisting on going to the
hospital where she works as a nurse to sneaking out on her own. The icing on
the cake was when she attempted to make a deal with Luther, actually believing he
would keep his word.
The suspense was intense as Clint tried to keep Rosie
safe. Despite using safe houses, the bad guys were either right on their heels
or a step ahead of them. I could feel the frustration as it became more
difficult to know who they could trust. Their last confrontation in the book
proves that point and leads to a desperate decision. A final scene with Luther
shows his frustration and serves as a lead-in to the next book.
The development of Clint and Rosie's relationship was
volatile. Rosie's insistence on blaming Clint helped her ignore the attraction
she felt whenever she was near him. However, their proximity made it difficult
for her to maintain her anger as she was forced to admit that Javier's death
was not Clint's fault. Clint has had feelings for Rosie since he met her but
believes it is hopeless because of Javier's death. But the more time they spend
together, the stronger the sparks between them become. I liked the ending and
seeing them finally admit their feelings for each other.

Her Mission with a SEAL - Cindy Dees (HRS #1981 - Feb 2018)
Series: Code: Warrior SEALs (Book 3)
Their mission: deliver a ruthless spy to justice
But can they outlast a storm as dangerous as their target?
Tracking an elusive Russian operative, CIA agent Nissa
Beck has no choice but to ask for help as a hurricane descends on New Orleans.
She turns to alpha Navy SEAL Cole Perriman. Used to conquering impossible odds,
now he must protect beautiful Nissa. But as unstoppable storms and passions
rage, there's more at stake for them than survival.
Terrific book that dropped me into the middle of intense
action and didn't let up until the end. Nissa is a CIA analyst working with a
SEAL team to locate and capture an elusive Russian operative. She is not a
trained field agent and spends much of the book scared spitless, but she does
what needs to be done.
Cole is the SEAL team leader, code name Frosty for his
ability to bury his emotions and get the job done. He's been a SEAL for many
years and is a few months from retirement. Unfortunately, Nissa proves to be an
unexpected distraction to his determination to capture Petrov.
The book opens with Nissa and the team attempting to
board a ship that Petrov is reportedly escaping on in the middle of a
hurricane. But when they get aboard, they discover the ship is deserted and
about to capsize in the storm seas. They barely managed to escape and had to
beat the hurricane back to land if they wanted to survive. I was glued to the
pages as they struggled to find shelter and then wait out the storm.
The intense suspense of the story continued as Nissa,
Cole, and the rest of the team continued their search for Petrov. Nissa's
brilliant detective work brings them closer to their goal and puts a target on her
back. The danger intensifies when Nissa uses herself to bait a trap, and an
unexpected twist puts them all at risk. The final puzzle piece led to a
confrontation that had me glued to the pages until it was done. Cole and the
team were great, but Nissa was amazing.
I enjoyed watching Cole and Nissa's relationship develop.
The sparks between them are immediate and explosive, which freaks out Cole.
He's never had this kind of reaction to a woman, and he doesn't know how to
deal with it. Colw is especially worried because he feels it is a distraction
that he can't afford if he is going to keep Nissa safe. He also has trouble
believing anyone could love him knowing what he's done. Nissa's reaction to his
insecurities and vulnerability was fantastic, and I loved seeing the effect on
Cole. Cole's big moment at the end was lovely.
But can they outlast a storm as dangerous as their target?

Their Accidental Honeymoon - Mona Shroff (HSE #3029 - Jan 2024)
Series: Once Upon a Wedding (Book 5)
There may be no strings attached
So why are his feelings in knots?
Spending his tropical honeymoon with his lifelong best
friend, Rani Mistry, was the balm Param Sheth needed after being jilted on his
wedding day. Until an unexpected kiss unleashes emotions long held in check!
Param and Rani agree it was a mistake, never to be discussed again. But when
Rani declares their (fake) elopement so Param's younger brother can be married,
they can't ignore their very real -- and very buried -- feelings much longer.
And as Rani's pretend husband, Param wonders whether it's finally time to make
this fantasy come true…
Param and Rani have been best friends since they were ten
years old. When Param was left at the altar on his wedding day (No Rings Attached), he took Rani on his honeymoon trip. She gave him the time he needed
to process without bugging him about moving on. Everything was as usual with
them except for the night they had a little too much to drink, leading to a much
more than friendly kiss. Freaked out by the feelings stirred up and not wanting
to risk their friendship, Param and Rani agreed to pretend it never happened.
Not long after they return home, Param's brother has a
medical emergency that needs expensive treatment. There is a trust fund that
will be released when all the brothers are married - and Param is the last
single brother. Rani suggests they fake a relationship and marry long enough to
get the funds. Surely, as best friends, they can pull off such a deception.
I enjoyed watching Param and Rani's relationship develop.
Neither one has been able to forget "that kiss" and are confused by
their sudden physical awareness of each other. Both fight the attraction that grows
stronger every time they are together. Having to put on the "we're in
love" act for their families just makes it more challenging. I laughed at
their reactions when everyone around them said it was about time they realized
their feelings for each other. Sometimes, I wanted to shake both of them for
being so blind and especially Rani for being so stubborn. I loved the ending
and seeing both let go of their fears and embrace the truth of their feelings.
I enjoyed spending time with the two families. The
teasing and support and long history of their relationships kept me intrigued
from start to finish. The glimpses of customs, foods, and traditions added to my
enjoyment of the story.
So why are his feelings in knots?

Wyoming Christmas Conspiracy - Juno Rushdan (HI #2260 - Jan 2025)
Series: Cowboy State Lawmen: Duty and Honor (Book 4)
For as long as he could remember,
She was his North Star
With adjacent ranches, Monty Powell and Amber Reyes were
always together. First as childhood friends and later as…more. Much more. But a
family legacy and a bigger secret kept them apart. Until a killer strikes and
casts suspicions on Monty. Revenge or reckoning, someone is out for blood.
Monty and Amber now set out to find evidence to expose a deeper criminal plot
before gunfire erupts again and threatens the new family of three they are
about to become.
This was a fast-paced, action-packed story with intense
suspense and a second-chance romance. Growing up on neighboring ranches, Monty
and Amber's childhood friendship grew into more when they got older. While
Amber was in love with Monty, he was more interested in following his own path.
Family interference and a big secret drove them apart until Amber's father's
death when manipulation from beyond the grave brings them together again.
The book opens with a bang as Amber stumbles onto a
murder scene where Monty is the prime suspect. She may have trust issues with
him, but Amber knows he isn't capable of murder. It is soon evident that someone has
it in for Monty and the entire Powell family. The twists and escalating attacks
kept me glued to the pages as the intensity built. The final confrontation was
a heart-pounding nail-biter with Amber in extreme danger.
I loved watching Monty and Amber navigate through their
relationship. Because of their past, Amber is reluctant to trust him with her
heart again. This puts her late father's demands on shaky ground, risking both
ranch properties. She also has a big secret she is keeping from him that will
change their future. Monty freely admits his past mistakes and insists he's
learned his lesson. He wants a chance to make things right. I liked that they
took the time to discuss the past and hopes for the future, ensuring they were
on the same page.
I liked seeing characters from earlier books and catching
up with their lives. I'm looking forward to more stories about the Powells and
their connections.

Better Than Friends - Jill Shalvis (HarperCollins - Jan 2025)
Series: Sunrise Cove (Book 7)
When Olive Porter's off-the-grid parents go missing, she
reluctantly seeks out Noah Turner, her ex and the only person she both trusts
implicitly and not at all.
As a special investigative agent for the National Park
Service, Noah's used to living under intense pressure. Or he was until he got
injured on the job. Now unhappily recuperating at home while being smothered by
his loving but nosy family, he'd love nothing more than a good distraction.
So when Olive shows up looking like a million bucks, he
has to do a gut and heart check. Because nope, no matter what, he can't fall
for her again, the woman who once blew up his entire life and never looked
back. How ironic then that his own personal hell (Olive) is also his ticket out
of town. The question is, will the risk be worth the reward?
Terrific second chance romance brought about by forced
proximity. Olive and Noah knew each other in high school. His sister, Katie, is
Olive's best friend. Olive moved in with her grandparents when she tired of her
parents' free-spirited lifestyle. Katie and
Noah lived next door, and their family became like a second family to
Olive. A devastating accident sent Olive fleeing from Sunrise Cove, leaving a
"Dear John" letter for Noah.
Years later, Olive returned to Sunrise Cove to help Katie
when her husband, Joe, and Noah were injured on the job. Joe is in a coma, and
Noah is on medical leave while he recovers. Noah has been staying with Katie
and her son Joey to help. He is unaware of Olive's imminent arrival.
I enjoyed the development of Noah and Olive's
relationship. It gets off to an awkward start as Olive still feels guilty about
the accident that happened their senior year. We get glimpses of their past
together as they work through those memories. The sparks of attraction are
obvious to everyone around them, but they initially resist giving in to them. Olive's
guilty feelings hold her back despite realizing her love for him never died.
Noah never blamed her for the accident and was brokenhearted when she left so
suddenly.
I loved their conversations, usually full of teasing and
snarky comments. There were also serious moments where the past was brought
into the light and dealt with. One of my favorite things about Noah was his support
as she dealt with her worry about her parents. I also loved his pride in her
strength and accomplishments. Noah does sometimes have trouble with
foot-in-mouth disease when trying to express his thoughts and feelings and
spends a fair amount of time doing damage control. I loved when he finally saw
the light and opened up to Olive. The scene was sweet and emotional with an epilogue
that was the icing on the cake.
One of the great things about a Jill Shalvis book is her
talent for creating believable families. I loved Katie, with her snark and lack
of a filter. Her love for her family and friends is undeniable, even though her
comments can be cringe-worthy. Her commentary on Noah and Olive's relationship
woes is hilarious. Her son, Joey, is an apple that didn't fall far from the
tree, especially when it came to Olive and Noah. The dynamics of Olive's parents
went a long way to explaining why Olive has the issues she has. Their
inconsiderate actions irritated me, though there was a hint of redemption at
the end.
Lighthearted moments were courtesy of Katie's ancient
bassett hound, Holmes, and the stray kitten, Pepper, he'd adopted. These two
were adorable and nearly stole every scene they were in.

Find Her - Katherine Garbera (HRS #2313 - Feb 2025)
Series: Price Security (Book 4)
A DEA agent has one goal in mind…
And getting personal could be deadly
Lee Oscar has convinced herself she can keep her past in
the past until an old friend tells her that a student of his has disappeared.
Lee launches a search for the missing teen, colliding with DEA agent Aaron
Quentin's investigation. Together they forge an impromptu partnership -- and
make a fake relationship their cover. Lee and Aaron are determined to rescue
the girl in danger while bringing down a deadly crime syndicate. Posing as
lovers without succumbing to the ruse may be the more difficult task.
Terrific book. Aaron Quentin intrigued me during his part
in the earlier book, Safe in Her Bodyguard's Arms. I figured out early that he
was one of the good guys and hoped he would get his own story. As with his
brother, the tragedy in Aaron's past influenced his present. He uses his work
as an undercover agent to keep people at a distance. He moved from Florida to
California to infiltrate a drug cartel.
Lee is Price Security's computer and information guru. She
works her magic from behind a computer in their offices. But when a friend from
her past asks her for help finding a missing teen, Lee steps out of her comfort
zone to search for her. The last thing she expected was to encounter Aaron and
end up part of his cover as his girlfriend.
This book had me hooked from the get-go. The suspense is
intense with the dual storylines of Aaron's mission of taking down the cartel
leader and Lee's search for the missing teen. Matters become more complicated
when an old adversary of Lee's turns up in Aaron's net. An unexpected twist leads
to a possible link between the two cases and intensifying danger for both. The
double-barreled ending was a nail-biter to the finish.
I enjoyed the development of Aaron and Lee's
relationship. There were sparks between them when they met in Miami. Aaron
tried flirting with her, but she wasn't interested. When they met again in LA,
the sparks were still there, but both tried to ignore them. That becomes more
complicated when Lee gets sucked into Aaron's op and must pretend to be his
girlfriend. Spending time together intensifies the attraction and allows them
to get to know each other. I loved how
in tune Aaron was with Lee and how good he was at sensing when she needed him. I
liked seeing them both lose some of their "lone wolf" attitudes and
discover they could support each other without losing independence. It didn't
take long for their fake relationship to start to feel real. Neither believes
they are good at relationships, and I loved seeing their determination to find
one that works for them.
And getting personal could be deadly

The Duke's Guide to Fake Courtship - Jade Lee (HH #1841 - Feb 2025)
Series: Daring Debutantes (Book 1)
A match destined to end
Yet impossible to resist…
Since he inherited a dukedom, all Declan seems to do is
put out fires. The latest? Deterring his feckless cousin from chasing a
reprehensible woman. Except Grace Nayao Richards is far from reprehensible, and
the beguiling, feisty young woman draws Declan closer…
As the illegitimate daughter of an earl, Grace needs an
advantageous marriage to protect her and her sister's futures. The handsome
duke's solution? A fake courtship with him to increase her popularity among the
ton. But as he teaches her to navigate London society, it's her dangerously
attractive guide she desires!
Intriguing story about two people from very different
backgrounds. Declan recently inherited the dukedom and feels he's done little
but solve other people's problems. The latest issue is his mother's and aunt's
claim that his cousin Cedric is about to disgrace the family by marrying an
unsuitable woman.
Grace is the illegitimate daughter of an earl and a
Chinese woman. She and her sister were recently found by the earl and brought
to England. Grace knows she needs to make a good marriage to protect herself
and her sister.
Grace was a fascinating woman. She disguised herself as a
boy in her early life and became a ship's navigator. But when revealed to be a
woman, she returned to the temple orphanage where she was raised, where her
father found her. She knows Cedric only wants to marry her for her dowry,
especially the ship, but she accepts its necessity. Unfortunately, being
illegitimate and biracial makes acceptance into Society nearly impossible.
Declan initially agrees with the ladies that Grace is
unsuitable as a wife for a man who will eventually be an earl. But his first
meeting with Grace leaves him astounded and intrigued. In his attempts to
convince Cedric to back off, he offers to introduce Grace to society so she can
find a more suitable mate. He uses a pretend courtship to make her more
appealing to other men.
But prejudice and pettiness complicate matters, and
Declan becomes more and more protective of Grace. There were some terrific
scenes during which he stood up for or protected her from harm. Declan is a man
who never stops learning, and Grace's life fascinates him. I loved the respect
he showed her knowledge and customs.
Grace is drawn to Declan even though she knows there is
no way a duke can marry a woman like her. I liked her willingness to stand up
for herself and her sister, and loved her self-defense scene. She is equally
protective of Declan and is afraid of doing anything that could harm him,
including believing they could have a future together.
The ending was fantastic. I loved Declan's
"aha" moment and the awesome scene at Almack's. The epilogue was an
excellent lead-in for Lucy's story - I can't wait to read it.
Yet impossible to resist…

Christmas Bodyguard - Katherine Garbera (HRS #2297 - Oct 2024)
Series: Price Security (Book 3)
She'll risk her life to right history's wrongs
But is she willing to risk her heart?
An anonymous tip about a missing rare artifact has put
antiquities investigator Daphne Amana in the line of gunfire. But giving up the
investigation is unthinkable. Being protected by her ex-lover, security expert
Kenji Wada? Impossible! She's used to working alone. Not to mention the fiery
attraction still simmering between her and Kenji…waiting for the right moment
to combust. But when a killer's dangerous game of cat and mouse unveils a
nefarious black market operation, the art world -- and Daphne's fledgling
reconciliation with Kenji -- is rocked to the core.
Terrific second-chance romance with a fascinating theme. Daphne
is a lawyer who assists countries wishing to reclaim items stolen from them
during war or disaster. In this case, she is the link between a village in Ethiopia
and a Los Angeles museum. The story opens as Daphne follows an anonymous tip
and receives a bullet to the shoulder instead of the information she expected.
Concerned about her safety, Daphne's boss hires a
bodyguard from Price Security to protect her until the case is resolved. The
last person she expects to see is Kenji, a past lover with whom her
relationship ended badly. Neither expected the resurgence of their previous
feelings for each other.
The combination of suspense and romance kept me glued to
the pages well past my bedtime. Daphne and Kenji had to come to terms with
their past to work together effectively. It wasn't easy, and both had issues
affecting their efforts. Kenji worries that his feelings for Daphne will
distract him from protecting her properly, but burying them doesn't work. Daphne
is reluctant to risk her heart, fearing that Kenji will walk away again. It
takes learning to trust themselves and each other to give them the courage to
plan a future together.
The suspense of the story was outstanding. The museum's
stonewalling of providing the requested information raises Daphne's concerns
that something shady is occurring. The escalating attacks reinforce that
feeling, and she and Kenji work together to uncover the truth. The twists and
turns kept me guessing, while the final confrontation brought everything to a
satisfying conclusion.
But is she willing to risk her heart?

Big Sky Bachelor - Joanna Sims (HSE #3077 - Feb 2025)
Series: Brands of Montana (Book 19)
Right man, right time, right place…
But for how long?
When successful real estate broker to the rich and famous
Danica Brand leaves her two-timing fiancé to regroup at the family ranch, the
city girl doesn't count on a tall, handsome doctor sweeping her off her feet.
Dr. Matteo Katz is the most eligible bachelor in Big Sky, Montana. And
everything from his Miami good looks to his small-town hospitality tempts
Danica into his bed. Matteo's endgame has always been marriage and a family,
but Danica is the only woman who makes him ready to commit. Can he convince her
to trade her big-city lifestyle for a small-town dream and a chance to redefine
her idea of "home"?
Two romances in one! The main story revolves around
Danica Brand, a top realtor in LA, and hometown doctor Matteo Katz. When Danica
discovers that her long-time fiancé and business partner has been cheating on
her, she heads home to Montana to regroup. Hurt, angry, and confused, the last
thing she expects is to be bowled over by a handsome doctor and his pet pig.
I loved the first meeting between Danica and Matteo. His
pet pig, Lulu, knocks her down, but it is Matteo who is down for the count. He's
pretty smooth in asking her out, though it helps that she is equally taken with
him. Their connection is quick and strong, and I enjoyed seeing them get to
know each other.
This book was a bit unusual in that the man falls fast
and hard instead of the woman. Matteo thinks long-term and permanent from the
beginning and must frequently remind himself to slow down. Danica is just as
drawn to Matteo, but the drama of trying to disentangle herself from her ex makes
her wary of committing again so soon. She also believes she will return to LA
rather than stay in her hometown.
I loved how Matteo supported Danica through the drama of
dealing with her ex. She is very independent and initially tries to keep that
part of her life separate. I liked watching her learn that there is strength in
accepting help. Being around Matteo and her family also helps Danica look at
her life and realize that she wants to make changes, but will it be enough to
keep her in Montana? I loved the ending and seeing how it all worked out.
The secondary romance involves a visitor to the ranch and
the cowboy who works with the horses. Journey is a single mom and romance
author looking to break through her writer's block. Having written a cowboy
romance that had some less-than-stellar reviews, she's looking for inspiration and
authenticity for her next book. She's immediately taken with Cody, a former
rodeo star who works on the ranch. I enjoyed his no-nonsense attitude and how
it helped her through her difficulties. Neither expected the feelings that grew
between them. Cody won her heart even more with his connection with her son. I
liked these two and hope to see them again in future books.
But for how long?

Shadow Survivors - Julie Miller (HI #2215 - Apr 2024)
Series: Protectors at K-9 Ranch (Book 1)
With children seeking a safe haven
Her ranch becomes a refuge.
Jessie Bennington's past motivated her canine-focused
business, where she heals those who are emotionally traumatized. When two young
children show up at her ranch, predators on their trail, Jessie can only trust
her longtime friend Garrett Caldwell. The deputy goes into protector mode
without a single hesitation. Garrett has buried his feelings for Jessie long
enough. He isn't about to let any danger come between them -- or the innocent
children -- now.
Terrific blend of suspense and romance with the added
bonus of a "mature" couple. This is the first book in a new series
centered around K-9 Ranch. Owner and dog trainer Jessie pairs up with her old friend
Garrett to protect two children with trouble on their trail.
Jessie and Garrett have traumatic pasts that still
influence their lives. Jessie lost her husband and baby in a home invasion
twelve years earlier, leading her to start her business training support dogs. Garrett
is a former sniper who has flashbacks to some of his missions. They have been
friends for many years, but Garrett wants more. At forty-six, Jessie is wary of
risking her heart again, especially on someone with a dangerous job. Garrett is
fifty and has been in love with Jessie for years. I loved his patience and
understanding of her fears while emphasizing that his feelings are forever.
When odd things happen around her ranch, Garrett's
protective instincts kick in. Matters become complicated when two runaway
children show up in Jessie's barn. Nine-year-old Nate and his five-year-old
sister, Abby, escaped from their drug dealer father and his predator boss. The
intensity ramps up as the bad guys close in. The final confrontation was a
nail-biter, both terrifying and exhilarating, as danger was faced and overcome.
I loved the ending and seeing Jessie find happiness at long last.
Her ranch becomes a refuge.

expected to find was a forever love.
Short but sweet story of two desperate people brought
together by Mrs. Dove-Lyon. The story opens as Christine prepares to escape the
marriage her greedy uncle arranged for her by climbing out of her bedroom
window. She flees to the Lyon's Den, where she appeals to the widow for help. She
needs to marry and escape London as quickly as possible.
Laird Kerrigan Lindsay desperately needs a wealthy wife. Disease
decimated the flocks of sheep his clan relies on, and he needs the funds to rebuild
the flocks to save his people. There is no time to waste.
Kerrigan and Christine are practical people. When Mrs.
Dove-Lyon introduces them, a few moments of conversation convinces them they
will deal well with each other. As a bonus, there are already sparks of
attraction. The marriage happens quickly, followed by the requisite trip to the
lawyer to arrange their finances. I liked the lawyer, who was kind and
efficient, and arranged a a place for them to stay for a few days. Their time
is cut short when Christine's uncle tracks her down and attempts to force her
to return with him. I loved Kerrigan's protectiveness.
I enjoyed their journey to Scotland. Over those few days,
Kerrigan and Christine had the chance to get to know each other. The drawbacks
of their characters become evident as the reader discovers that Christine has
no idea what will be required of her when she takes over running his home. At
the same time, Kerrigan simply assumes that Christine received the typical
training of most young women. Both are in for a shock.
I loved how, despite having little idea of what to do,
Christine took charge right away, quickly earning the respect of Kerrigan's
clan members. Meanwhile, Kerrigan was oblivious to the difficulty he left her
with when he immediately left to acquire new sheep. Though he was somewhat apologetic
when he arrived home, I feel like he still didn't understand how difficult it
was for her. Fortunately, Christine was forgiving, and as they worked together,
their feelings for each other strengthened.
But Christine's uncle hasn't given up, and trouble comes
calling. The buildup to the climax kept me glued to the pages as I waited for
him to strike. I liked the twist that altered the outcome, though I thought Christine's
uncle got off too easily.
The epilogue was good and a nice wrap-up to the story.
The Major and the Scandalous Widow - Sarah Mallory (HH #1651 - Oct 2023)
The infamous lady…
He must resist!
Major Jack Clifton must fulfill his military friend's
dying wish by returning his wedding ring to his widow. But when honorable Jack
finds Eloise a year later, she's nothing like the woman that he was told to
expect. In fact, the ton view her as utterly scandalous! Yet, Jack quickly learns
that Eloise's reputation has been wrongfully imposed on her…and that he has
forbidden feelings for the real Eloise!
The book opens with the heartbreaking scene of Lord Tony
Allyngham receiving a fatal injury during the Battle of Waterloo. He entrusts his
friend, Major Jack Clifton, with two keepsakes he wishes to return to his wife.
A year later, Jack finally has the chance to fulfill his mission. He is
dismayed to find a widow with a scandalous reputation instead of the grieving
young woman he expected.
Eloise spent her year mourning, then reemerged in Society
as a beautiful and wealthy young woman. Though sought after by many, she is not
interested in marrying again, only continuing Tony's charitable intentions by
setting up a foundling hospital. By her side is her good friend, Alex, who grew
up with her and Tony. Their relationship is the subject of speculation and
rumor.
Jack and Eloise's first meeting did not go well. They
encountered each other at a Society event, where Jack saw the flirtatious,
care-free façade that Eloise shows in public. He's judgmental and believes the
rumors he hears. However, when they meet again for him to deliver Tony's
keepsakes, Jack sees a different side of her. He is still unsure what to believe,
but he can't deny the sparks of attraction he feels. Eloise also feels something
that has been missing from her life.
Jack's emotions are torn when it comes to Eloise. He
can't deny his growing feelings for her, but he knows she has secrets she won't
share. Those secrets become a problem when Eloise finds herself the victim of a
blackmailer. I could feel her fear of exposure, her unswerving loyalty to those
who would suffer if they were revealed, and her determination to protect those
she loves. Jack wants to help but she shuts him out.
The blackmail plot introduces a sense of danger as the
blackmailer grows more desperate. Eloise's determination to handle everything alone
put her in several dangerous situations, making her future increasingly
uncertain. The final showdown with the blackmailer was an intense nail-biter of
an event with an excellent resolution.
The only thing left is for Jack and Eloise to get past
the secrets that keep them apart. I figured out the secrets that Eloise was
protecting early on and why it was so important to protect them. I loved Alex's
part in bringing them together and Jack's ultimate understanding of the truth. The
ending was terrific.
He must resist!

Hunted on the Bay - Amber Leigh Williams (HRS #2230 - May 2023)
Untangling her past
With dangerous consequences
When Desiree Gardet finds herself on the shores of Mobile
Bay, she's there to claim what's rightfully hers. But soon she is engulfed in a
mystery about her past…with handsome bar owner William Leighton as her only
guide. If Fairhope once seemed like a refuge, what insidious forces compelled
Dez to flee there? And can she trust kind, sexy William with the entire truth?
Good book with intriguing characters. Desiree arrived in
Fairhope with one thing on her mind - retrieving the car that should have been
hers after her mother's death, even if that meant stealing it. But the heist
didn't go quite as she had expected, and Desiree finds herself absorbed into
the local community and learning things she never knew about her mother.
However, someone from her past has other ideas.
William spotted Desiree trying to take his car and
stopped her. But instead of turning her in to the police, he talks her into
sticking around and finding out how and why her mom's car ended up there.
There's something about her that draws him in.
I loved watching William and Desiree's relationship
develop. He is patient, kind, and an all-around nice guy. Desiree's past left
her believing she can only depend on herself and trust no one. I loved his easy
way of watching over her, encouraging her without pushing her, and being the
support she needs and hasn't had in a long time. I loved seeing her lose some
of her wariness and discover that she no longer had to be alone.
The suspense was good, more of a psychological suspense
than a whodunit. Her mother's past and secrets caused problems for Desiree that
she'd been running from for years. Here, she had the opportunity to have those
questions answered and put that past behind her. However, someone has their own
version of the past and is bent on revenge. The escalating attacks put more
than Desiree in danger, and there were multiple occasions where survival was
doubtful. The final confrontation had me glued to the pages until it was over.
I will watch to see if William's brother Finnian gets his
story.
With dangerous consequences

Safe in Her Bodyguard's Arms - Katherine Garbera (HRS #2281 - June 2024)
Series: Price Security (Book 2)
A drug cartel murdered Obie Keller's parents. She gets a
chance to prove that when she leaves the Florida coast and heads back to where
she came from -- with bodyguard Xander Quentin by her side. His reasons for
heading into the swamplands are intertwined with her own, and it's not long
before their shared mission becomes a shared attraction. But they'll have to
stay alive if they're going to have a shared future…
Excellent book that kept me hooked from start to finish.
Obie manages a Miami coffee shop where a recent hire, Aaron, was arrested for
dealing drugs. Accused of working for a drug cartel, he asks her to contact his
brother for help. When that gets no response, she agrees to enter his home and
retrieve hidden evidence he claims will bring down the cartel. Obie is
reluctant but agrees, never expecting to encounter someone trying to kill her.
Xander hasn't had any contact with Aaron in ten years. A
tragedy in their teen years drove the four brothers apart, but Xander can't
forget the better times together. Wary of what Aaron is involved with, Xander
arrives at his home just in time to rescue Obie.
This is a fast-paced story that takes place over just a
few days. The action starts with a bang as the bad guys do their best to stop
Obie and Xander from escaping with the evidence. Xander's capabilities are
unquestionable as a private security specialist with a Special Forces
background. Obie's early life living in the swamps with her family gave her
unique skills. I loved watching their teamwork as they escaped into the swamp.
Xander's willingness to listen to Obie's expertise won him many points in my
book - I love a hero who can admit he doesn't know everything. They deal with
weather, wildlife, and dangerous pursuers while trying to ignore the attraction
that sizzles between them. Desperate circumstances accelerate their getting to
know each other, mutual trust being the only thing keeping them alive. I liked
seeing them lower their walls.
The suspense of the story was terrific. I was glued to
the pages as Obie and Xander fought through the swamp to get the evidence to a
safe place. Xander trusts his team to have their backs, while Obie leans toward
trusting law enforcement. The intensifying pursuit kept them on edge, with a
nick-of-time intervention from Xander's backup. The twist in the final
confrontation wasn't a surprise, but I loved Obie's part.
I liked the ending and seeing the Price Security people
together. I like how they feel like a family to each other, offering
professional and emotional support. I look forward to more stories with these
characters. I would also like to see if Obie finds out what happened to her
brother.

Murder at the Alaskan Lodge - Karen Whiddon (HRS #2280 - June 2024)
In the Alaskan wilderness…
She had nowhere to hide!
When big-city Maddie Pierce inherits half of a remote
Alaskan fishing lodge from the grandfather she never knew, there's one catch:
she must manage it for one year with Dade Anson -- who clearly thinks she'll
soon turn tail. Maddie discovers Dade might not be the only one who wants her
gone when she starts receiving threatening text messages from an anonymous
source. But he might be her only protector from a danger that lurks ever
closer…
Maddie is at a crossroads when she inherits half of an
Alaska fishing lodge property. Dumped by her boyfriend and without a job due to
restructuring, Maddie heads for Alaska to fulfill the one-year residency
requirement to retain ownership. The other heir is Dade, who was raised by her
grandfather and is not thrilled by the conditions.
Maddie and Dade butt heads initially upon her arrival in
Alaska. Maddie has big ideas for the property but realizes she has much to
learn once she arrives. Dade resents the property going to a woman he believes
ignored her grandfather for years, while Maddie is jealous of the time Dade spent
with the grandfather who never tried to get in touch with her. To complicate
matters, underneath the antagonism are sparks of attraction that neither wants
to acknowledge.
Once they got past their initial antagonism, I enjoyed
seeing Maddie and Dade's teamwork. Maddie is willing and eager to learn the ins
and outs of managing the lodge. The sparks between them grow as they get to
know each other, and each starts to dream of possibilities. But neither has
spoken of their feelings, and each is wary of saying something and risking
rejection. The question is, will they survive to take a chance?
The suspense of the story is good. Before she left Texas
to claim her inheritance, Maddie began receiving texts telling her not to go to
Alaska. After she arrived, more texts threatened trouble if she didn't leave.
As the tone of the texts became more threatening, explosions and other attacks
showed the texter was becoming more desperate. The ending was intense and
satisfying, with a promising future ahead.
She had nowhere to hide!
The Imperfect Lyon - Aviva Orr (Dragonblade - Jan 2025)
Series: Lyon's Den (Book 70)
Some situations are so dire that even the Black Widow of

A woman in desperate straits.

a terrible predicament—one that will destroy her reputation and disgrace her
family for decades.
Distraught, Kate contemplates self-exile to the
continent. But her aunt has a better idea. There is a matchmaker in London
rumored to be a miracle worker at solving problems for the unmarried and
desperate. Kate accepts her aunt's advice and secures Bessie Dove-Lyon's
services. Little does she know the challenge has just begun.
A man resigned to a life alone.
Fate has been cruel to Oliver Harrington, 4th Earl of
Knox. First, it took his ability to sire an heir, and then it stole his beloved
wife and lifelong companion.
Devastated, Oliver retreats from Society. But after two
years of deep mourning, he can no longer stand the silence that echoes
throughout his mansion.
Seeking distraction, Oliver turns to the most notorious
gambling den in London. But when offered a second chance at happiness, Oliver
is forced to confront his detached ways and acknowledge his innermost desires.
Can two people struck by fate's blows find new love and
change the course of their lives?
Quick read with an emotional romance and a hint of
intrigue. Kate is in a tough spot. She and her fiancé gave in to their love,
but before they could marry, he and his sister (Kate's best friend) died in a
carriage accident. Now Kate is pregnant and contemplating moving away to hide
the truth. However, her aunt talks her into hiring Mrs. Dove-Lyon to find her a
husband.
Oliver, Earl of Knox, spent two years in deep mourning
after the death of his wife and the news that he was sterile, followed by the
news that his distant cousin and heir had died. To escape the overwhelming
silence of his home, he heads to the Lyon's Den for distraction. He doesn't
expect Mrs. Dove-Lyon to appeal to him to marry one of her projects. With no
desire to risk his heart again, Oliver declines the offer.
But Fate isn't done with him. When Oliver discovers the
lady in question was auctioned off to a creep, he can't help but intervene. I
liked his protectiveness toward Kate. I liked that they were honest with each
other about their pasts and their expectations. It didn't take long for them to
realize that they liked each other, with those feelings rapidly turning to
love.
Matters become complicated when someone from Kate's past
reappears and proceeds to make trouble. I ached for the pain it caused Kate and
cheered when she discovered the truth. There was a twist in the identity of her
former fiancé that I suspected from the start, but there was more to it than I
knew. I liked the resolution and seeing Kate's strength of will.
River Wild - BJ Daniels (HQN - Jan 2025)
Series: Powder River (Book 4)
Everyone has a secret. Some of them are deadly…
Some scars can't be hidden. Sheriff Stuart Layton has
plenty of those, courtesy of an attack that left him doubting himself as a
lawman. But in Bailey McKenna he recognizes a different kind of hurt. That
unspoken understanding has him opening his door to the mysterious, elusive
young woman again and again, hoping she'll tell him what she's running from.
Bailey has spent years searching for the rancher who put
her through hell. She never saw his face, but she's convinced he's somewhere in
Powder River. Now, suddenly, she has terrifying proof of how close he is. This
time, Stuart is by her side, determined to protect her -- and find retribution
for himself. But will that be enough to fend off a killer waiting to finish
what he started?
Good book about two people scarred inside and out. Stuart
became the sheriff of Powder River after his father's death. But a recent
attack left him doubting his abilities to carry out his job. He considers
resigning and leaving Powder River, which also means leaving Bailey behind.
Bailey was assaulted twelve years earlier by an unknown
rancher. She never told anyone about the attack but spent the years since then
searching for him. She feels that she might be closing in on him when a young
woman who resembles her turns up dead.
The suspense of this story kept me intrigued from start
to finish, as did the developing relationship between Stuart and Bailey.
They've known each other all their lives, and Stuart has been in love with her
for years. Bailey has feelings for him, too, but until she can get past the
attack, she can't find a way to move on. She knows that Stuart is there for her
and frequently shows up at his house late at night, looking for comfort. He
knows she is running from something and is determined to be there when she is
ready to share.
The murder of the woman, Willow, is the catalyst that
drives Bailey to confess all. Her pain, fear, and anger leap off the page as
she describes what happened to Stuart. Although previously ready to resign,
Stuart won't quit until he finds justice for her. They join forces to continue
her investigation and grow closer as they spend more time together. I liked
seeing their walls begin to drop and their understanding of what each has
experienced strengthen their feelings. But even if she survives, will Bailey be
able to put the past behind her and accept the love Stuart longs to give her?
The suspense of the story was great. The intensity
escalates quickly from Bailey's feelings of being watched and the discovery of
Willow's body. The twists and turns as suspects came and went and threats
intensified kept me guessing to the end. The final confrontation was a
nail-biter with a twist I didn't see coming.
There are also continuing threads that run throughout the
series. Holly Jo, Holden McKenna's ward, begins settling into her new life.
Puppy love creates some complications and lessons learned. Charlotte Stafford
hasn't returned to Powder River or responded to anyone who tries to contact
her, while Holden continues waiting for her to return. CJ Stafford is in jail,
awaiting trial, and trying to figure out how to get out of it. Other characters
from previous books appear as we catch up on everyone's lives.

Love Letters from Her Cowboy - Sasha Summers (HSE #3075 Jan 2025)
Series: Texas Cowboys and K-9s (Book 7)
He may be an aloof cowboy…
But still waters run deep!
Practical cowboy Dougal McCarrick sure didn't believe in
things like love at first sight. But the moment he sets eyes on Emory Swanson
and the injured dog she's rescuing, Dougal can't help but be captivated by the
beautiful Granite Falls newcomer with the mournful eyes. So much so that the
shy rancher pours his feelings out in letters. Racked with guilt over her
husband's death, Emory's still paying penance for the past. Why does she
deserve the beautiful words of a mysterious cowboy poet? Dougal may just be the
one to melt the ice from her heart…and in the process, capture his own elusive
and forever love.
Sweet holiday romance with enough heat to warm your
heart. Emory came to Granite Falls for a new start after her husband's death,
cooking for the guests at her aunt's B&B. Weighed down with grief and
guilt, an injured dog wiggles its way into her heart.
Dougal came along as Emory attempted to rescue the dog
and helped her. He is immediately smitten with the beautiful woman with the sad
eyes. However, Dougal is anything but a smooth-talking cowboy and is completely
tongue-tied around her. The only thing he can do is put his feelings into letters
and poetry and leave them anonymously in her mailbox.
I enjoyed watching Dougal and Emory's relationship
develop. The sparks of attraction are there from the beginning, but Emory tries
to ignore them. Mistakes of the past haunt her and make her unwilling to risk
her heart again. I liked how Dougal spent time helping Emory and Ruth, allowing
him to spend time with her. Many sweet scenes with Dougal and his triplet
nieces and nephew (the "critters") show him in a wonderful light. But
Emory is afraid to trust her feelings beyond giving in to their attraction. It
takes patience on Dougal's part and some straightforward advice from Ruth to
break through the fears holding her back. The ending was sweet, and I enjoyed
seeing the changes in both characters.
A little bit of a mystery ran through the book, too. The
black sheep son of the B&B's former owner returns to town, claiming he's
dying and looking to make amends. But something about Lucas feels off to Emory,
and Dougal remembers the past too well to trust him. There was a not-surprising
twist at the end.
But still waters run deep!

The Duke's Man-at-Arms - C.H. Admirand (Dragonblade - Dec 2024)
Series: Duke's Guard (Book 11)
"'Tis time to let someone take care of ye, lass."
He stared into her moss-green eyes and rasped, "Let it be me."
In this Regency Romance, O'Malley must convince the angel
of the streets that the truth he suspects she hides changes nothing. He will
stand by his vow to protect her, to defend her, and to love her with every
fiber of his being.
Emmett O'Malley will move Heaven and Earth to find and
punish the man who kidnapped Michaela.
O'Malley plans to take justice into his own hands. He
suspects there is more than compassion and the need to heal that compels the
woman he has come to love to rescue others who have been unwilling victims. He
will extract more than a bloody pound of flesh from the lord responsible for
taking what Michaela refused to give.
Working alongside the angel of the streets has opened O'Malley's
eyes and his heart to someone who shares the same need to heal others. They
both believe that every life has worth and everyone deserves a second
chance…until Michaela is abducted, and he suspects she is hiding something from
him.
A decade is a long time to keep a secret… Michaela will
take hers to the grave!
Her life changes forever the night the man her father
approved of violates her. To her horror, Michaela glimpses the monster he is a
heartbeat before he steals her virtue, destroys her hopes, and crushes her
dreams.
She vows never to speak his name again, nor tell a soul
what he has done. She discovers an inner strength and calling to help heal
others the only way she can, by leading a double life. On the surface she is
the reserved daughter of a well-known physician. Beneath is a woman who works
tirelessly in the stews of London, doing all in her power to heal and help
those society shuns—other women who have had their future, good name, and
reputation stripped from them without their consent. She will not let them be
broken!
I have been looking forward to Emmett's story and was not
disappointed. I could not put the book down from the moment I picked it up
until I turned the last page. Though as tough on the outside as his brothers
and cousins, his caring heart makes him
an excellent healer. Several books ago, he met Michaela, called the Angel of
the Streets, and has been smitten ever since.
Ten years earlier, Michaela's future and dreams collapsed
when a suitor violated her and threatened to ruin her and her father's
reputations if she said anything. After working at her doctor father's side for
years, she began to assist women who had suffered the same fate secretly. It is
a dangerous endeavor, and Michaela is frequently one step ahead of those who
wish to stop her. One night, her luck runs out, and she is kidnapped.
When told of her abduction, Emmett immediately heads out
to find her. I enjoyed seeing him call on his sources throughout the city to
track her down, determined to find her before it was too late. They've worked
together several times, and Emmett realizes how much he loves her.
I loved watching Emmett and Michaela's relationship
develop. Both are healers, so they have that in common. However, Michaela
believes that her reputation keeps her from having the future she craves, even
though she tells others everyone deserves a second chance. Emmett has his work
cut out to convince her that his love is unconditional. I loved their
interactions, as Michaela's stubbornness easily matched Emmett's.
Matters are complicated by the danger that lurks for
Michaela. The man from her past wants revenge and is determined to make her
pay. Michaela's protectiveness toward her father and her understandable trust
issues make her reluctant to reveal his identity. The suspense is intense as
Emmett and other Guard members close in while Michaela remains in danger. The
ending was a nail-biter and had me glued to the pages until it was over. There
was an interesting twist involving Emmett at the end of the confrontation, with
a hilarious follow-up in the last few pages.
Colton's K-9 Rescue - Colleen Thompson (HRS #2307 - Jan 2025)
Series: Coltons of Owl Creek (Book 12)
Justice awaits a serial killer…
With a K-9 team in hot pursuit.
To search-and-rescuer Malcolm Colton, hunting the
fugitive who terrorized his family is worth any risk on a stormy mountainside.
But when his trusty K-9 follows a scent, he's stunned to encounter Giselle
Dowling, the celebrity ghostwriter with whom he shares a past tragedy and
personal trauma. It's a bittersweet reunion as the estranged pair decide to
work together to stop the killer. As their search brings them closer to the
cult leader who threatens the Colton family, Giselle and Malcolm find themselves
falling for each other. Can Malcolm's K-9 help them bring down the killer and
lead them to a future filled with promise?
Good conclusion to this Colton series. Malcolm works on
the family ranch and volunteers with the local search and rescue and his K9 companion,
Pace. When he hears that the fugitive who terrorized his family is sighted on the
mountain, he and Pace go out on their own to find him. However, the first
person they found was Giselle, Malcom's almost sister-in-law. Malcolm and
Giselle have avoided each other since the tragic death of his fiancée and her
sister, Kate.
I enjoyed watching Malcolm and Giselle's relationship
develop as they worked together to find the killer. Both are weighed down by
their grief and survivor's guilt, determined to ignore the sparks that flare
between them. The author did a terrific job of showing their conflicting
emotions as attraction battled grief. I could feel both characters' pain when
memories overcame them and rooted for them to find healing together. I loved
Malcolm's support and encouragement of Giselle as she also battled to regain
her confidence after a problematic professional setback. I also liked the
resolution of that issue.
The suspense of the book was excellent. Two storylines run
throughout the book. The first is Malcolm's ongoing search for those
responsible for Kate's death. It has been three and a half years since the
accident, but he hasn't given up. Things look up when he gets information that leads
to the identity of the boat's driver.
The second storyline runs throughout the series as the
Coltons and law enforcement pursue a cult leader and serial killer who has
terrorized his family. His "off-the-record" search starts with
encountering Giselle and their attempt to warn a neighbor about Markus Acker. The
action intensifies throughout the book as Acker's attacks escalate. The
occasional section from his point of view shows his growing desperation. The
final confrontation was an intense, edge-of-the-seat scene that kept me glued
to the pages until it was over.
Two of my favorite characters were Malcolm's dog, Pacer,
and the puppy Giselle adopted. Besides being Malcolm's SAR partner, Pacer
provides emotional support when Malcolm's grief overwhelms him. Scarlett is an
enthusiastic beagle puppy that turns out to be unsuited for service dog
training. I loved seeing her and Giselle connect and the effect Scarlett had on
Giselle's grieving. There were some amusing scenes involving Scarlett, one of
which was one in which she was instrumental in saving the day.
I loved the last chapter and how it wrapped up the series
for all of the couples.
With a K-9 team in hot pursuit.
