Series: Price Security (Book 2)
A drug cartel murdered Obie Keller's parents. She gets a
chance to prove that when she leaves the Florida coast and heads back to where
she came from -- with bodyguard Xander Quentin by her side. His reasons for
heading into the swamplands are intertwined with her own, and it's not long
before their shared mission becomes a shared attraction. But they'll have to
stay alive if they're going to have a shared future…
Excellent book that kept me hooked from start to finish.
Obie manages a Miami coffee shop where a recent hire, Aaron, was arrested for
dealing drugs. Accused of working for a drug cartel, he asks her to contact his
brother for help. When that gets no response, she agrees to enter his home and
retrieve hidden evidence he claims will bring down the cartel. Obie is
reluctant but agrees, never expecting to encounter someone trying to kill her.
Xander hasn't had any contact with Aaron in ten years. A
tragedy in their teen years drove the four brothers apart, but Xander can't
forget the better times together. Wary of what Aaron is involved with, Xander
arrives at his home just in time to rescue Obie.
This is a fast-paced story that takes place over just a
few days. The action starts with a bang as the bad guys do their best to stop
Obie and Xander from escaping with the evidence. Xander's capabilities are
unquestionable as a private security specialist with a Special Forces
background. Obie's early life living in the swamps with her family gave her
unique skills. I loved watching their teamwork as they escaped into the swamp.
Xander's willingness to listen to Obie's expertise won him many points in my
book - I love a hero who can admit he doesn't know everything. They deal with
weather, wildlife, and dangerous pursuers while trying to ignore the attraction
that sizzles between them. Desperate circumstances accelerate their getting to
know each other, mutual trust being the only thing keeping them alive. I liked
seeing them lower their walls.
The suspense of the story was terrific. I was glued to
the pages as Obie and Xander fought through the swamp to get the evidence to a
safe place. Xander trusts his team to have their backs, while Obie leans toward
trusting law enforcement. The intensifying pursuit kept them on edge, with a
nick-of-time intervention from Xander's backup. The twist in the final
confrontation wasn't a surprise, but I loved Obie's part.
I liked the ending and seeing the Price Security people
together. I like how they feel like a family to each other, offering
professional and emotional support. I look forward to more stories with these
characters. I would also like to see if Obie finds out what happened to her
brother.

Murder at the Alaskan Lodge - Karen Whiddon (HRS #2280 - June 2024)
In the Alaskan wilderness…
She had nowhere to hide!
When big-city Maddie Pierce inherits half of a remote
Alaskan fishing lodge from the grandfather she never knew, there's one catch:
she must manage it for one year with Dade Anson -- who clearly thinks she'll
soon turn tail. Maddie discovers Dade might not be the only one who wants her
gone when she starts receiving threatening text messages from an anonymous
source. But he might be her only protector from a danger that lurks ever
closer…
Maddie is at a crossroads when she inherits half of an
Alaska fishing lodge property. Dumped by her boyfriend and without a job due to
restructuring, Maddie heads for Alaska to fulfill the one-year residency
requirement to retain ownership. The other heir is Dade, who was raised by her
grandfather and is not thrilled by the conditions.
Maddie and Dade butt heads initially upon her arrival in
Alaska. Maddie has big ideas for the property but realizes she has much to
learn once she arrives. Dade resents the property going to a woman he believes
ignored her grandfather for years, while Maddie is jealous of the time Dade spent
with the grandfather who never tried to get in touch with her. To complicate
matters, underneath the antagonism are sparks of attraction that neither wants
to acknowledge.
Once they got past their initial antagonism, I enjoyed
seeing Maddie and Dade's teamwork. Maddie is willing and eager to learn the ins
and outs of managing the lodge. The sparks between them grow as they get to
know each other, and each starts to dream of possibilities. But neither has
spoken of their feelings, and each is wary of saying something and risking
rejection. The question is, will they survive to take a chance?
The suspense of the story is good. Before she left Texas
to claim her inheritance, Maddie began receiving texts telling her not to go to
Alaska. After she arrived, more texts threatened trouble if she didn't leave.
As the tone of the texts became more threatening, explosions and other attacks
showed the texter was becoming more desperate. The ending was intense and
satisfying, with a promising future ahead.
She had nowhere to hide!
The Imperfect Lyon - Aviva Orr (Dragonblade - Jan 2025)
Series: Lyon's Den (Book 70)
Some situations are so dire that even the Black Widow of
Whitehall may be unable to fix them…
A woman in desperate straits.
After Kate Sheldon's betrothed dies, she finds herself in
a terrible predicament—one that will destroy her reputation and disgrace her
family for decades.
Distraught, Kate contemplates self-exile to the
continent. But her aunt has a better idea. There is a matchmaker in London
rumored to be a miracle worker at solving problems for the unmarried and
desperate. Kate accepts her aunt's advice and secures Bessie Dove-Lyon's
services. Little does she know the challenge has just begun.
A man resigned to a life alone.
Fate has been cruel to Oliver Harrington, 4th Earl of
Knox. First, it took his ability to sire an heir, and then it stole his beloved
wife and lifelong companion.
Devastated, Oliver retreats from Society. But after two
years of deep mourning, he can no longer stand the silence that echoes
throughout his mansion.
Seeking distraction, Oliver turns to the most notorious
gambling den in London. But when offered a second chance at happiness, Oliver
is forced to confront his detached ways and acknowledge his innermost desires.
Can two people struck by fate's blows find new love and
change the course of their lives?
Quick read with an emotional romance and a hint of
intrigue. Kate is in a tough spot. She and her fiancé gave in to their love,
but before they could marry, he and his sister (Kate's best friend) died in a
carriage accident. Now Kate is pregnant and contemplating moving away to hide
the truth. However, her aunt talks her into hiring Mrs. Dove-Lyon to find her a
husband.
Oliver, Earl of Knox, spent two years in deep mourning
after the death of his wife and the news that he was sterile, followed by the
news that his distant cousin and heir had died. To escape the overwhelming
silence of his home, he heads to the Lyon's Den for distraction. He doesn't
expect Mrs. Dove-Lyon to appeal to him to marry one of her projects. With no
desire to risk his heart again, Oliver declines the offer.
But Fate isn't done with him. When Oliver discovers the
lady in question was auctioned off to a creep, he can't help but intervene. I
liked his protectiveness toward Kate. I liked that they were honest with each
other about their pasts and their expectations. It didn't take long for them to
realize that they liked each other, with those feelings rapidly turning to
love.
Matters become complicated when someone from Kate's past
reappears and proceeds to make trouble. I ached for the pain it caused Kate and
cheered when she discovered the truth. There was a twist in the identity of her
former fiancé that I suspected from the start, but there was more to it than I
knew. I liked the resolution and seeing Kate's strength of will.
River Wild - BJ Daniels (HQN - Jan 2025)
Series: Powder River (Book 4)
Everyone has a secret. Some of them are deadly…
Some scars can't be hidden. Sheriff Stuart Layton has
plenty of those, courtesy of an attack that left him doubting himself as a
lawman. But in Bailey McKenna he recognizes a different kind of hurt. That
unspoken understanding has him opening his door to the mysterious, elusive
young woman again and again, hoping she'll tell him what she's running from.
Bailey has spent years searching for the rancher who put
her through hell. She never saw his face, but she's convinced he's somewhere in
Powder River. Now, suddenly, she has terrifying proof of how close he is. This
time, Stuart is by her side, determined to protect her -- and find retribution
for himself. But will that be enough to fend off a killer waiting to finish
what he started?
Good book about two people scarred inside and out. Stuart
became the sheriff of Powder River after his father's death. But a recent
attack left him doubting his abilities to carry out his job. He considers
resigning and leaving Powder River, which also means leaving Bailey behind.
Bailey was assaulted twelve years earlier by an unknown
rancher. She never told anyone about the attack but spent the years since then
searching for him. She feels that she might be closing in on him when a young
woman who resembles her turns up dead.
The suspense of this story kept me intrigued from start
to finish, as did the developing relationship between Stuart and Bailey.
They've known each other all their lives, and Stuart has been in love with her
for years. Bailey has feelings for him, too, but until she can get past the
attack, she can't find a way to move on. She knows that Stuart is there for her
and frequently shows up at his house late at night, looking for comfort. He
knows she is running from something and is determined to be there when she is
ready to share.
The murder of the woman, Willow, is the catalyst that
drives Bailey to confess all. Her pain, fear, and anger leap off the page as
she describes what happened to Stuart. Although previously ready to resign,
Stuart won't quit until he finds justice for her. They join forces to continue
her investigation and grow closer as they spend more time together. I liked
seeing their walls begin to drop and their understanding of what each has
experienced strengthen their feelings. But even if she survives, will Bailey be
able to put the past behind her and accept the love Stuart longs to give her?
The suspense of the story was great. The intensity
escalates quickly from Bailey's feelings of being watched and the discovery of
Willow's body. The twists and turns as suspects came and went and threats
intensified kept me guessing to the end. The final confrontation was a
nail-biter with a twist I didn't see coming.
There are also continuing threads that run throughout the
series. Holly Jo, Holden McKenna's ward, begins settling into her new life.
Puppy love creates some complications and lessons learned. Charlotte Stafford
hasn't returned to Powder River or responded to anyone who tries to contact
her, while Holden continues waiting for her to return. CJ Stafford is in jail,
awaiting trial, and trying to figure out how to get out of it. Other characters
from previous books appear as we catch up on everyone's lives.

Love Letters from Her Cowboy - Sasha Summers (HSE #3075 Jan 2025)
Series: Texas Cowboys and K-9s (Book 7)
He may be an aloof cowboy…
But still waters run deep!
Practical cowboy Dougal McCarrick sure didn't believe in
things like love at first sight. But the moment he sets eyes on Emory Swanson
and the injured dog she's rescuing, Dougal can't help but be captivated by the
beautiful Granite Falls newcomer with the mournful eyes. So much so that the
shy rancher pours his feelings out in letters. Racked with guilt over her
husband's death, Emory's still paying penance for the past. Why does she
deserve the beautiful words of a mysterious cowboy poet? Dougal may just be the
one to melt the ice from her heart…and in the process, capture his own elusive
and forever love.
Sweet holiday romance with enough heat to warm your
heart. Emory came to Granite Falls for a new start after her husband's death,
cooking for the guests at her aunt's B&B. Weighed down with grief and
guilt, an injured dog wiggles its way into her heart.
Dougal came along as Emory attempted to rescue the dog
and helped her. He is immediately smitten with the beautiful woman with the sad
eyes. However, Dougal is anything but a smooth-talking cowboy and is completely
tongue-tied around her. The only thing he can do is put his feelings into letters
and poetry and leave them anonymously in her mailbox.
I enjoyed watching Dougal and Emory's relationship
develop. The sparks of attraction are there from the beginning, but Emory tries
to ignore them. Mistakes of the past haunt her and make her unwilling to risk
her heart again. I liked how Dougal spent time helping Emory and Ruth, allowing
him to spend time with her. Many sweet scenes with Dougal and his triplet
nieces and nephew (the "critters") show him in a wonderful light. But
Emory is afraid to trust her feelings beyond giving in to their attraction. It
takes patience on Dougal's part and some straightforward advice from Ruth to
break through the fears holding her back. The ending was sweet, and I enjoyed
seeing the changes in both characters.
A little bit of a mystery ran through the book, too. The
black sheep son of the B&B's former owner returns to town, claiming he's
dying and looking to make amends. But something about Lucas feels off to Emory,
and Dougal remembers the past too well to trust him. There was a not-surprising
twist at the end.
But still waters run deep!

The Duke's Man-at-Arms - C.H. Admirand (Dragonblade - Dec 2024)
Series: Duke's Guard (Book 11)
"'Tis time to let someone take care of ye, lass."
He stared into her moss-green eyes and rasped, "Let it be me."
In this Regency Romance, O'Malley must convince the angel
of the streets that the truth he suspects she hides changes nothing. He will
stand by his vow to protect her, to defend her, and to love her with every
fiber of his being.
Emmett O'Malley will move Heaven and Earth to find and
punish the man who kidnapped Michaela.
O'Malley plans to take justice into his own hands. He
suspects there is more than compassion and the need to heal that compels the
woman he has come to love to rescue others who have been unwilling victims. He
will extract more than a bloody pound of flesh from the lord responsible for
taking what Michaela refused to give.
Working alongside the angel of the streets has opened O'Malley's
eyes and his heart to someone who shares the same need to heal others. They
both believe that every life has worth and everyone deserves a second
chance…until Michaela is abducted, and he suspects she is hiding something from
him.
A decade is a long time to keep a secret… Michaela will
take hers to the grave!
Her life changes forever the night the man her father
approved of violates her. To her horror, Michaela glimpses the monster he is a
heartbeat before he steals her virtue, destroys her hopes, and crushes her
dreams.
She vows never to speak his name again, nor tell a soul
what he has done. She discovers an inner strength and calling to help heal
others the only way she can, by leading a double life. On the surface she is
the reserved daughter of a well-known physician. Beneath is a woman who works
tirelessly in the stews of London, doing all in her power to heal and help
those society shuns—other women who have had their future, good name, and
reputation stripped from them without their consent. She will not let them be
broken!
I have been looking forward to Emmett's story and was not
disappointed. I could not put the book down from the moment I picked it up
until I turned the last page. Though as tough on the outside as his brothers
and cousins, his caring heart makes him
an excellent healer. Several books ago, he met Michaela, called the Angel of
the Streets, and has been smitten ever since.
Ten years earlier, Michaela's future and dreams collapsed
when a suitor violated her and threatened to ruin her and her father's
reputations if she said anything. After working at her doctor father's side for
years, she began to assist women who had suffered the same fate secretly. It is
a dangerous endeavor, and Michaela is frequently one step ahead of those who
wish to stop her. One night, her luck runs out, and she is kidnapped.
When told of her abduction, Emmett immediately heads out
to find her. I enjoyed seeing him call on his sources throughout the city to
track her down, determined to find her before it was too late. They've worked
together several times, and Emmett realizes how much he loves her.
I loved watching Emmett and Michaela's relationship
develop. Both are healers, so they have that in common. However, Michaela
believes that her reputation keeps her from having the future she craves, even
though she tells others everyone deserves a second chance. Emmett has his work
cut out to convince her that his love is unconditional. I loved their
interactions, as Michaela's stubbornness easily matched Emmett's.
Matters are complicated by the danger that lurks for
Michaela. The man from her past wants revenge and is determined to make her
pay. Michaela's protectiveness toward her father and her understandable trust
issues make her reluctant to reveal his identity. The suspense is intense as
Emmett and other Guard members close in while Michaela remains in danger. The
ending was a nail-biter and had me glued to the pages until it was over. There
was an interesting twist involving Emmett at the end of the confrontation, with
a hilarious follow-up in the last few pages.
Colton's K-9 Rescue - Colleen Thompson (HRS #2307 - Jan 2025)
Series: Coltons of Owl Creek (Book 12)
Justice awaits a serial killer…
With a K-9 team in hot pursuit.
To search-and-rescuer Malcolm Colton, hunting the
fugitive who terrorized his family is worth any risk on a stormy mountainside.
But when his trusty K-9 follows a scent, he's stunned to encounter Giselle
Dowling, the celebrity ghostwriter with whom he shares a past tragedy and
personal trauma. It's a bittersweet reunion as the estranged pair decide to
work together to stop the killer. As their search brings them closer to the
cult leader who threatens the Colton family, Giselle and Malcolm find themselves
falling for each other. Can Malcolm's K-9 help them bring down the killer and
lead them to a future filled with promise?
Good conclusion to this Colton series. Malcolm works on
the family ranch and volunteers with the local search and rescue and his K9 companion,
Pace. When he hears that the fugitive who terrorized his family is sighted on the
mountain, he and Pace go out on their own to find him. However, the first
person they found was Giselle, Malcom's almost sister-in-law. Malcolm and
Giselle have avoided each other since the tragic death of his fiancée and her
sister, Kate.
I enjoyed watching Malcolm and Giselle's relationship
develop as they worked together to find the killer. Both are weighed down by
their grief and survivor's guilt, determined to ignore the sparks that flare
between them. The author did a terrific job of showing their conflicting
emotions as attraction battled grief. I could feel both characters' pain when
memories overcame them and rooted for them to find healing together. I loved
Malcolm's support and encouragement of Giselle as she also battled to regain
her confidence after a problematic professional setback. I also liked the
resolution of that issue.
The suspense of the book was excellent. Two storylines run
throughout the book. The first is Malcolm's ongoing search for those
responsible for Kate's death. It has been three and a half years since the
accident, but he hasn't given up. Things look up when he gets information that leads
to the identity of the boat's driver.
The second storyline runs throughout the series as the
Coltons and law enforcement pursue a cult leader and serial killer who has
terrorized his family. His "off-the-record" search starts with
encountering Giselle and their attempt to warn a neighbor about Markus Acker. The
action intensifies throughout the book as Acker's attacks escalate. The
occasional section from his point of view shows his growing desperation. The
final confrontation was an intense, edge-of-the-seat scene that kept me glued
to the pages until it was over.
Two of my favorite characters were Malcolm's dog, Pacer,
and the puppy Giselle adopted. Besides being Malcolm's SAR partner, Pacer
provides emotional support when Malcolm's grief overwhelms him. Scarlett is an
enthusiastic beagle puppy that turns out to be unsuited for service dog
training. I loved seeing her and Giselle connect and the effect Scarlett had on
Giselle's grieving. There were some amusing scenes involving Scarlett, one of
which was one in which she was instrumental in saving the day.
I loved the last chapter and how it wrapped up the series
for all of the couples.
With a K-9 team in hot pursuit.
