This day honors everyone who is now, or once was, a newspaper carrier. This holiday also includes anyone who hawked the paper on the street, or at a newsstand. Years ago, this job was primarily populated by kids, from pre-teen through approximately sixteen. Now, with newspaper circulation dwindling for a few decades and likely continue to do so, few kids deliver papers anymore except in small towns. But, the “Carrier Day” tradition lives. This job is now largely held by adults, many of them delivering the paper from their cars. For the record: In 1950, there were 1,772 daily newspapers in the United States. Today, there are only 1,033.

This day celebrates and recognizes the achievements of the blind and visually impaired, and their independence. That independence is represented by the white cane that they use to travel from place to place. This day is not about helping them across the street. Rather, it is about helping blind people to live and function independently. The white cane is an invaluable tool for the blind. It affords blind people freedom of movement they otherwise may not have. The white cane is a well-recognized symbol of independence.

This is a national day began in 1992 and is devoted to helping others by doing volunteer work in the community. The activity can be almost anything. On this day, millions of Americans participate in community improvement projects such as cleanup, fix-up, painting, and repair in poorer neighborhoods, parks, and municipal facilities. It doesn’t matter what project you take on. Nor, does it matter whether you help a non-profit organization, the community, your town, a nursing home, a church, a food kitchen, or any other group in need. What matters is that you participate. Commit to helping others for just one day. Make a difference today and every day!
